Finding Isaac is a heartwarming story set in the 1960’s in the South. Pete McLean grows up on a cotton farm where he attends school and then helps on the farm after school, weekends and summers. At this farm that white and black folk work together and when Pete’s father dies tragically in a tractor accident, Isaac, his father’s right hand man who is black, takes him under his wing to help him grieve. When Isaac suddenly goes missing, Pete is devastated but determined to find him. In his search, he crosses forbidden lands and meets a young, homeschooled girl. They form a close friendship, at first behind their parents and grandparents backs, meeting each other in a set location to walk, talk and share lunches. Eventually, their secret friendship is revealed and quickly turns into love. Pete’s grandfather is committed to finding Isaac and in doing so learns that the town of Glory and its citizens hold deep, dark secrets. This story shows love, compassion, faith, community and the trials of living in the South in the 1960’s. The author endears us to the characters with carefully woven development. This book had me from beginning to end.
