I thoroughly enjoyed this sample and feel the subject matter to be timely (despite being set more than 50 years ago in the 1960’s when, as today, racism was rampant). While the book tackles the tough and complicated subject of racism, in just the first few pages the author is able to captivate readers with charming characters you feel for and relate to while intriguing us at the same time with a hint at a mystery and possible conspiracy. I can’t wait to find out what happened to Jack, or to find out how that might relate to Isaac’s disappearance later in the novel. This book was easy to read, captivating and left me wanting more. I’m especially interested to know how a child handles the undercurrents of the times given the innocence of a young person’s perspective.
