Beautifully written, author Valerie Fraser Luesse transports readers to 1960's in the deep South, to a quiet community learning how to navigate an evolving society. This isn't just a story of the South, though. This is a story of two families coming together despite all odds, grieving as one, finding comfort in one another, and bonding together over innocent love and mutual respect. Pete and Dovey have such a pure affection for one another that almost everyone around them can't help but bask in their tenderness. Daddy Ballard and his daughter Lila have been devastated by loss time and again, yet they continue to show Pete what it means to be a good person and how to be generous and gracious. John Pickett is no stranger to loss himself, yet he can't help but be drawn in by Lila's friendship and kindness, especially as she subtly takes care of his daughter, Dovey, in ways he never could. Fraser Luesse is a master storyteller with witty dialogue, endearing characters, and a tender story of love and loss that is sure to be a hit for fans of To Kill a Mockingbird, Remember the Titans, Tatiana De Rosnay, and Kristin Hannah.
