I won this book from the BookishFirst site.
I was really excited to win this won because after my sneak peek, it was a book I wanted to read. It did not disappoint me.
When I first started reading, Pete is a child and idolises his father. His father works in the cotton fields, which is the family business. Not far into the book, Pete looses his dad from an accident in the cotton fields and this is where Isaac comes in. Isaac is a 30 year old black man who has worked for Pete's grandfather (daddy Ballard) since he was old enough to. Isaac tried to save Pete's dad without success, he stays with Pete while they move the tractor, while they remove the body, he tries to keep young Pete occupied. Isaac takes Pete fishing during his fathers wake. Isaac from then on takes Pete fishing, to his church when possible, even gets permission from Tandy to take him to a gathering for blacks only to eat ribs. They form a special bond of friendship.
Isaac doesn't come around a week and just as Pete is going out to see if he can find him, daddy Ballard tells Pete that Isaac is missing. This does not sit well with Pete at all.
The only thing partially negative I have to say is that by the title, I would have thought Isaac would have been prevalent throughout the story, however he was not thought about much in the middle when Pete met Dovey.
The book is set in Alabama. The author builds kind of a hierarchy with the characters, (1) the rich whites (2) the whites (3) the blacks, the Pete Ballard and his family is on the top rung being the rich whites, Isaac is the bottom being blacks, however Pete and his granddad do everything humanly possible to figure out what happened so Hattie (Isaac's) mom can get as much peace as possible - I that is beautiful thing. I like seeing people come together, especially where it might not happen often.
This author has a gift for telling a story, for giving the characters family ties, for bring so many characters together in a cohesive book.
This book had me in tears a couple of times, and I think it takes a special author to be able to do that as well. I was unable to put this one down once I started it.
The plot is excellent. The characters are amazing. The writing is stunning. Get your copy of Missing Isaac, your tissues, and prepare to be amazed.
