Missing Issac by Valerie Fraser Luesse was a delightful book. The story begins when Pete, an eleven year old boy, looses his father in a devastating farm accident. His family’s hired helper and friend is Isaac. The story takes place in the Deep South in the 1960s. Isaac takes Pete under his wing and is supportive and kind. Because Issac is black and Pete is white, their friendship needs to be kept quite. Isaac lives in fear of the KKK as well as repercussions from the prejudiced town they all live in. When Issac goes missing, there is much speculation about his disappearance as well as sorrow from Pete and Iassac’s family.
As time goes on Pete never forgets Isaac and never gives up on finding out what happened to him. The story is also about Pete’s growing up in this farming prejudiced town. There is a love story as well as some heartache but Pete finally gets the answers to Issac’s disappearance.
This was an enjoyable story that left me feeling warm and cozy. The writing was fluid and interesting. I received a copy of the book from Bookish First and this is my unbiased review.
