Wow, Luesse sure knows how to start a story! Short as this first chapter is, it is able to encapsulate both a major event that will kick off the action of the book and a real sense of the tenor and rhythm of the life these initial characters are leading, which I always appreciate. Lines such as "One of its back wheels was still spinning against the night sky, like it was trying to run over the moon" are so evocative and create quite a picture in the mind--I look forward to reading more of writing like this.

This fantastic start plus the promise of a story about race, class, and love in the 1960s South mean I am most certainly adding this book to my TBR!
