It has always worried me when a novel starts with a characters personal tragedy. It foreshadows a story that will be haunted by the first few pages of the novel. In Missing Isaac that is precisely what Valerie Fraser Luesse does. What appears to be the main characters father is killed in a farming accident and the bonds a friendship are established with Isaac of the title. Of course not sure what happens from there as we are only given this glimpse to judge the entirety.
From the first few pages the writing is sound. There isn't anything to indicate that the writer doesn't know their craft. It may be interesting to know where the story goes from such a tragic beginning.
