Nice, cute, low stakes
Midnight at the Blackbird Cafe is lovely. It really is all magical small town and the story really stayed with me. I remember a lot of details about the pies and the intricate web of character drama, and the adorable way one character’s daughter greeted everyone with, “Hi hi!” I loved the writing style, it was soft, descriptive, and thoughtful. And I found the character relationships and grudges and histories to feel realistic and not overly sentimental, depressing, or dramatic.
Having said all that, I’m still not super crazy about this one. I enjoyed it for sure and the ambiance was so on point. But I didn’t adore it. The romance felt like it was added in just to grab the romance readers and keep them involved. I think I’m just not that into small town cozy mysteries with a hint of fantasy and a whole heap of family drama.
So all in all, cute and low stakes. A nice break from a bunch of epic fantasy war series.
