Anna Kate Callow had heard of Wicklow, Alabama from her mother who left the town as a pregnant teenager and her grandmother who owned the Blackbird Café there but she had never been to Wicklow until her grandmother died and left her the café. In her will, Zee had the stipulation that Anna Kate had to spend two months there running the café before it would be hers to do as she wanted. Anna Kate has plans to go to medical school as her mother, who is also dead, wanted; she plans to stay the two months and then sell the café and return to Massachusetts. However, she should have listened when she was told that Wicklow has a way of holding on to you once you are there. Blackbirds are supposed to fly into the Mulberry trees behind Anna Kate’s café and home at midnight and sing for an hour. The singing is supposed to be messages from the other side and those who eat a piece of pie from the blackbird café can receive messages from their loved ones who have passed. Midnight at the Blackbird Café is magical. There is a mystery of Anna Kate’s heritage, there is the group of birders who come to see the blackbirds, there are lots of lovable quirky characters, there is romance for several characters, and there is the rebirth of a dying small town. Following Anna Kate’s journey in Midnight at the Blackbird café is a charming and delightful read. It is a story of love, family, forgiveness and being open to new people and different ideas. I hope there is a sequel so I can visit Wicklow and the townspeople again. I think fans of Sarah Addison Allen will enjoy this book; it has the same mystical writing as her books. Thanks to Bookish First for an early copy to read.
