I just finished the excerpt and I'm itching to know the rest of the story. In the first 50 pages of Midnight at the Blackbird Cafe we meet Anna Kate, who has come to run the cafe owned by her Grandmother who recently passed away. We also meet Natalie who has moved with her 2 year old daughter, Ollie, back to Wicklow, Alabama to live with her parents. Wicklow is an artist's colony located in the mountains of Alabama and is populated with quirky people all of whom I fell in love with at first meeting. The Blackbird Cafe is famous for its blackbird pie (made with fruit, not birds) that has some magical properties that haven't been explained yet. I'm dying to know. The blackbirds sing in Wicklow from midnight to one am every night and have a connection with a tunnel that forms to connect the living with the dead. Anna Kate knows her grandma was a guardian, and that she is also, but she not very sure what that means. The author hints at much more but the story has yet to unfold.

All this in the first 50 pages!!! The characters are well-developed. You get to know them quickly without a lot of exposition - Heather Webber did a fabulous job. Her clear writing style makes for an easy read - I can see my self staying up until I finish this book, then passing it around my own small town. Thanks so much for the chance to read this much!!
