This book is written in true southern form. You can hear the "southern woman" accent in the writing as you read every word. Anna Kate returns to her parent's hometown after the death of her Granny Zee passes away. She is there to bury her Granny Zee and then leave. She has no intentions of trying to get to know her father's extended family. Anna Kate is well aware that this town and its secrets were the reason for her own mother's leaving many years before.

Anna Kate's Granny Zee was the owner and operator of the Blackbird Café in town. Anna Kate is curious about the famous pie that is made and sold there and, after some trepidation, goes into the café with the intentions of getting that slice of pie and then leaving. That doesn't happen. What does happen is a series of events that will affect Anna Kate's life forever and make her glad that she did visit this small town in Alabama.
