I loved this excerpt I was miserable when it ended! Anna Kate Callow has come back to her Grandmothers Zee's small town, Wicklow AL for her funeral. She has been studying up in Boston MA to become an MD. She is inundated by nosy neighbors questions who each bring her a zucchini loaf. Anna Kate hopes now that she is in Wicklow that some questions she has from the past will be answered. She wants to know about her Grandfather and about her Fathers accident. These things were forbidden subjects growing up. Zee owned The Blackbird Cafe, where her specialty was the Blackbird Pies (made with fruit). The Blackbirds (24 of them) came at midnight and sang there melodious birdsong for the past century. Anna Kate was the POV then it switched for a while to Natalie Linden Walker. She was a widow with a 2-year-old daughter named Ollie. She is a half-sister to Anna Kate but they don't know anything about each other. All Natalie knows is she is forbidden to go near The Blackbird Cafe and their family hates the Callows. Natalie's father is Doc Linden, the family Dr. for the town. It switches back to Anna Kate being the POV and her being questioned by Mr. Lazenby about whether she is planning on keeping the cafe open. She also meets a teenager who was close to her Grandmother. Then it ends with Doc Linden coming to see her! I wanted to read more. I definately would like to finish this book.
