Can we talk about the novel's intro. - its 'beginning at the beginning'?! In my opinion, this introduction accomplishes so much. It's atmospheric, immediately immersing readers in this place where blackberry sweet tea is readily at hand, and where superstition is a way of life. A feeling of mystery or suspense is established in these first few paragraphs as well. What story is the unnamed reporter digging up? What's the significance of the blackbirds? And lastly, the back-and-forth between the reporter and Faylene Wiggins (brilliant name, by the way) is funny, and quirky, and charming.

'Charming' is the best description I can give this book, so far! I'm choosing this word not only because it gets at this feeling of warmth that surrounds Anna Kate (and by extension us as readers) as she meets the locals, enters this place - but because it suggests the magic that informs Anna Kate's past, her family history... and, I predict, her future!.

Midnight at the Blackbird Cafe seems like the kind of book I would read, and love, and pass on to my awesome women relatives.

Before I conclude, I want to say the cover is beautiful! The pie and spoons rest on what looks like a well-worn, and well-loved, surface. Also I love that there is more than A spoon; there are spoons twined together, inviting a collective enjoyment, experience, of the pie and story.
