Raj Bhatt feels like he has always struggled to find his place. Immigrating from India as a young child, he felt like an outsider in school. As an adult, it doesn’t seem to have changed. Now in the course of a week, Raj’s life has been turned upside down. Raj makes a racially inappropriate comment while interviewing a black couple for membership of his tennis club. Later in the week, Raj’s job is in jeopardy when he is accused of being reverse racist by a group of his college students. Members Only paints a vivid picture of how a simple mistake, can further accentuate that divide.

Members Only is a timely and relevant story. It broaches racialism and how it shapes us, without being too heavy. This a very character driven story about an Indian American man and his desire to fit in, not just racially, but socially. Pandya has created a very likeable character in Raj. While the reader may not sympathize with the cultural differences, this is an insightful story for anyone who has ever wanted to fit in.
