Set in a liberal university, and a “members only” tennis club, this book chronicles a disastrous week in the life of Dr. Raj Blatt, non tenured anthropology professor. He’s the only non white member of the tennis club, and is asked to be on the membership committee. He makes a racist comment as the committee is interviewing an African American couple - I felt so bad for him then, don’t we all have moments when entirely the wrong words escape our mouth? Troubles at the university are next, where a group of his students accuse him of reverse racism.
As his week spirals out of control, things start to look really bleak. People want apologies that he does not think he needs to give, and he is having trouble giving the apology that he thinks is warranted.
I really enjoyed this, and how it made me think a little more about racism.
