I found it interesting to read of racism from the point of view of Raj, the narrator, an immigrant from Bombay who moved to America with his family when he was a child. He is now a relatively happy and settled middle-aged man, husband to a white wife and together raising their two young sons.
The starting point for the story is when Raj makes a racist comment to a potential African America couple during a meeting for potential new members at his predominantly white tennis club. Misunderstandings follow, and Raj experiences one of the toughest weeks of his life.
The character of Raj is not necessarily easy to like at first, as he feels a bit regimented and self-satisfied, but as things unravel and people show their true natures, the reader may find that they are rooting for a fair and happy ending for Raj.
