I don’t know that I’ve ever experienced the level of sympathetic embarrassment I felt while reading this excerpt. I actually felt my face heat up to an unnatural, tomato-red inferno. This is both well written and terribly interesting. It’s a look at race and skin color and exclusivity that I haven’t seen before. This excerpt follows Raj who appears to be the token POC at his family’s Tennis Club. The situation in this scene is an interview process for selecting new couples to join as members. While racist microaggressions toward Raj abound, he commits a huge faux pas when he accidentally blurt outs “nigga please” to the ONLY black couple brought forward to be members. The whole situation is completely unexpected and somehow sort of understandable given what he explains of his character and background. I am so entirely interested to know where this goes.
