Simplistic characters for a complicated topic

I seek out books by and about people of color (and I'm always excited to see broader representation within the Asian American diaspora). The book blurb didn't really capture my attention too much, but I thought I would give it a shot since the topic is compelling and time. After reading the first impression, I'd pass on the book. The characters seemed very simplistic even for a first chapter and I couldn't find much to like about the protagonist, who seemed whiney and not particularly self-actualized for a middle-aged, college professor in anthropology. The first chapter felt almost like an after-school special for middle-aged folks. I could see this being a short story and it might actually be more compelling in that format, but as a novel, I doubt I'd finish it.
