The first thing I noticed was the exasperation of the narrator as he relates the boredom and disappointment he has with the selection process for new members of the country club to which he belongs. It is clear, immediately, that he sees himself as an outsider while trying to belong, both at the club and throughout his own childhood. His excitement over the possibility of having an African-American couple as members of the club lands him in an uncomfortable situation with the couple and the members of the interview board.

I'm very interested to see how the African-American couple, the white members of this club, and his family handle this faux-pas, and how things go from bad to worse for Raj, our narrator, who is himself a man who has most likely had to smile in the face of microaggressions, ignorance, and racist statements.
