I usually avoid fantasy books (especially mythology retellings) like the plague. I just never seem to enjoy them even when they’re done well. But this book has me wanting to ignore all of that and jump out of my comfort zone. I was drawn to the cover and love the idea of a historical west African setting but the writing pretty much sealed the deal for me here. I love the way I instantly felt like I was in 15th century Timbuktu. I feel like this one might be the rare fantasy win for me!
