"Masquerade" immediately captures your attention with its colorful descriptions and engaging atmosphere. The opening chapter describes a busy Timbuktu overflowing with colorful market life. This is starkly contrasted with an abrupt, foreboding quiet and the terrible end of a Songhai general. This contrast establishes a drastic mood and makes you want to read the story until the end.

The book's cover, with its elaborate mask-like decorations that allude to cultural depth and concealment, brilliantly captures the narrative's essence, combining historical components with enigmatic undertones.

I'm especially interested in reading more due to the book's gripping beginning. It promises a story told through the vividly drawn and immediately likable eyes of characters intertwined with intrigue and the grim realities of power transitions. In a place as rich in history as Timbuktu, the ominous beginning of a coup indicates a narrative full of twists and turns. This novel has exciting plot twists and cultural relevance thanks to its strong narrative voice and intricate world-building.
