I appreciate the sentiment behind Making Your Marriage a Fortress by Gary Thomas: Every marriage will encounter storms, though one can't know when or what sort. Rather than have a rocky marriage that adds to one's troubles, one can strengthen it ahead of time so it provides a refuge. Thomas invokes God and quotes the Bible throughout - I'm not sure this book will resonate with non-Christian readers.

Each chapter follows a different couple and their story. I couldn't help but feel like these would have been more interesting had they been written by one of the spouses themselves, rather than Thomas.

The cover doesn't pull me in. It has a plain black background, with the title in all caps text in white and tan. The subtitle is portrayed somewhat awkwardly, in a way that I think takes away from the text itself: "Strengthening Your MARRIAGE to Withstand LIFE'S STORMS."
