This was much more depressing and dark than I was expecting. The beginning was a bit slow to grab my attention, so when I made it to the 25% mark of the audiobook, I got out my hardcover and sped read the rest to see how it all came together.
I just don't think this book was for me, which is a shame because I heard so many good things about this book.
Sometimes the author's writing style just doesn't work for someone, and I think that was the case here. I've tried one or two other books by her and wasn't grabbed by those either. My other issue, which is personal and doesn't apply to everyone, was that the characters didn't come alive for me. I wasn't attached to any of them and found it hard to care about the difficulties they were facing.
Dark academia is fun to read, and I prefer the version that has fantasy elements or even horror elements. This offering just didn't work for me on a personal level.
