Ivy Gamble has no interest in obtaining the magical powers her twin sister, Tabitha possesses. Gamble works as a private investigator, living an enjoyable life with no desire for something more. Her sister Tabitha works as a magically-gifted professor at the local magic boarding school in Sunol, California. The pair rarely speaks, especially because of their varying lifestyles. When Ivy is called to investigate a murder that occurs at Tabitha’s school, Ivy hesitantly accepts the offer. It is here that Ivy learns more about her sister’s life, the life that Ivy could have had, and the dark mysteries of the magical world.

I am a particularly big fan of all things mystery, magic, and thrillers, so I was super excited to pick up MAGIC FOR LIARS. I especially love all of the LGBGT references, perfectly-timed for Pride Month! Gailey does a fantastic job of really digging deep into the sister bond present between Ivy and Tabitha. The book mentions several magical elements like “the chosen one” that reminded me a bit of Harry Potter, but I felt that the execution of the magical aspects was a little abstract for me. I was under the impression that MAGIC FOR LIARS is an adult-fiction book, but I definitely got some YA vibes. Nevertheless, this is a fun, light read that has some great LGBT representation.
