I wanted and expected to love it

This was not at all what I was expecting. I went into it expecting a mix of Jessica Jones and Pretty Little Liars with some magic, and I really thought I was going to love it. I barely managed to finish it, and only did so because I had a review copy. If I had borrowed or bought this book, I would have stopped reading around 30%.

Ivy drove me crazy with her constant whining about everything. I think if the main character had been different (more interesting, and not living in a perpetual pity party), I might have liked it a little more.

I was also disappointed with how little of the magic system we actually got to see in action. I kept feeling like I should be loving it, but there wasn't enough there to really care about. I have no idea what the limitations are (we do find out a couple of limitations, at least), how it actually works, etc.

The murder mystery aspect also let me down. I had the entire ending figured out very early (right after Ivy started talking to people at the school), and kept hoping for another twist or something, but it never came.

I was really looking forward to reading this one, and I feel terrible for not liking it more. I do think it will be well loved by a lot of people, it just wasn't for me, unfortunately.
