Initially, the description sounds like a Harry Potter murder mystery. I quickly realized this is not the case. It reads more like a crime novel. I could have done without all the swearing early on, but it does decrease as the book continues.
The story itself is definitely original and worth reading. There are places where the action seems to drag a bit, and there are parts of this world that I wish were explored more thoroughly. However, as the main character is trying to distance herself from the magic, this may have been intentional.
The author does a good job of getting inside the mind of the main character as she struggles to reconcile her normal life from the magical life her sister leads, which she feels she may have missed out on. Though this is a fantasy world, the concerns and problems of the characters are very relatable.
Overall, this book held my interest and I wanted to get to the end to see what happened.
