There are a few concepts in literature that I love; magic, hot mess protagonists, and good world building. From the segment I was able to read, this book looks like it has all three.

Our main protagonist doesn't like magic, this immediately sets the more humorous tones of this novel for me. She is well written and easy to relate to making the rest of the world make a lot more sense. We learn later that her estranged twin (yup estranged twin, gotta love tropes used well) is actually magically gifted. Knowing this helps the readers establish a lot when it comes to the tension between the two women before we ever see them interact.

Messy, funny, romantic, thrilling, and a little bit of murder makes this book an instant add to my 'will read' pile when it finally comes out.

I also want to point out that the author and the editor of this book have some real skills here. There is enough detail and background to give the reader the knowledge they need about the setting and history of the characters but it never feels slow or like filler. So far I am really enjoying this take on the noir magic genre and I can't wait to read more.
