Jessica Jones x The Magicians, in a good way

That title sums up my first impression: this very much reminded me of a grittier magic-academy series (The Magicians is my best example of something much darker than Harry Potter, and given the character's last name is the same as the showrunner, how could I not think of it?), but with a sort of Jessica Jones-like PI character digging into the mysteries of the place.

I enjoy the switch to 1st person when we meet Ivy: despite her methodical, deductive reasoning, her biases and bitterness make her an unreliable narrator, which is great. She also ends up being a really interesting way to learn about the world of magic -- and magic schooling -- without having too much exposition.

So far I'm super intrigued, especially given the bit at the beginning about The Prophecy -- this is a genre we don't often get.
