With so many YA books (particularly sci-fi and fantasy) launching as the first of two, three, or more in a series, it was refreshing to get a book that stands all on its own. The triple point-of-view style was nice; it was interesting to see things from both perspectives - the outlaws and the lawman. Their differing backgrounds bring a unique flavor to their stories, as each grapples with the reality of what the government is hiding and planning. To Shane and Ava, deception and mistrust of authority is second nature. To Cyrus, it cuts to the core of everything he thought his position stood for. And while Cyrus and Shane/Ava are antagonistic towards each other, none of them are the true villain, adding another layer of depth to the conflict. However, the dynamics between those three were more compelling than the "main" villain, which could've been fleshed out a little more.
