I’m not sure how I feel about this book. My favorite genre is thriller/mystery, so I was looking forward to this First Look. The closed-room cruise ship setting is appealing, the writing and plot are engaging, and the cover is cleverly intriguing. Yet, to quote the protagonist, Jade, “having a nemesis was exhausting.” Yes, it is, and I also found it exhausting. While I understand Jade’s pain, and even how easy it is to spiral into obsessive hatred after being wrongly hurt, it feels as though the author doesn’t trust the reader to understand without being in-your-face obvious. I want to like Jade and to know more about her emotional landscape than just as a bitter and scorned friend and lover. At the same time, I enjoyed the cast of characters that were introduced and would continue reading to see how both Jade and the storyline develop.
