The sneak peek of "Lying in the Deep" by Diana Urban is off to a great start! Even though it's a YA mystery genre, I found the characters, plot and setting to be intriguing and quite realistic (which isn't always the case with YA reads). As an adult reader, I found the main character, Jade, to be a multi-faceted teenager. She is intelligent and wise beyond her years. However, she is also a bit insecure and jealous of her ex-best friend Lainey and her ex-boyfriend Silas. Silas unceremoniously broke up with Jade via text after a two year relationship. He is now in a romantic relationship with Lainey, who has not been in contact with Jade since Silas' text. Since they all attend Stanford, Jade felt that she needed a break and decided to attend a four month campus on board a luxury ship. She originally planned this adventure with Lainey. To her surprise, she runs into both Lainey and Silas in the registration line. Even though she has made some new friends, she cannot avoid these two on the ship and in classes. Her attempt to talk to Silas alone backfires when Lainey shows up and makes a scene. It appears that Silas has something to hide (or does he)? We know that there is a murder on the ship. Is it Lainey? Who did it? I'm looking forward to reading the remainder of this interesting novel to find out. Great read thus far!
