Reader’s Notes:

– this is told from mainly Valentina’s point of view with a few small sections following another character(s)

– there are a few bad spirit/ghosts/imaginary creature

– Valentina’s mother hasn’t been in her life

– a character’s father passed away due to liver cancer & their mother grieves by drinking and sleeping

Review:

I removed a star as the bad spirit/ghost(s) aspect didn’t sit right with me personally.

Despite not being comfortable with the ghosts, the artwork throughout the entire story was absolutely gorgeous! And the color schemes of the scenes helped me to know when a change came over Val’s outlook and would likely usher in the ghost/spirit.

As for the story itself, I loved that we kinda knew from the beginning who Val’s one true love was and could track him as she navigated her life. I loved that he waited fairly patiently for her and did his best to not cross any boundaries that there were at the time as she was beginning to realize that maybe she liked him too. I loved Val’s grandma too! She was so funny and liked just randomly popping into Val and her father’s life. I really enjoyed getting to know a bit more about Lunar New Year and Chinese, Korean, Vietnamese culture through the different events that took place and the people that attended them.

Summary:

Valentina desires a true love like that her parents had, but family history seems to point out that she is destined to never find it. Until one day she meets a lion dancer troupe and believes she’s falling for one of the guys on it. But the chance meeting will bring even more meaning to Val’s life than she ever imagined…
