This is a heartwarming story following a girl named after Valentine’s Day as she learns more about her family background while navigating friendships and looking for love. Valentina is limited by her family’s lies, secrets, and curse, but she overcomes the past after deciding what she wants for her future. Valentina is a strong character that you can’t help but root for. Other characters like her grandma, Bernice, and Les’ sister bring humor and light heartedness to the story.
Personally I enjoyed the cultural elements included because I could relate as an Asian American. The illustrations were also really well done and added a lot to the story, especially the lion dancing and lunar new year celebrations. Overall a feel good story that touches on more serious topics. It was easy to get into, and I finished reading in one sitting.
