The larger plot beats are fairly standard, but the specifics (from the individual characters, to the whole story line around lion dancing) was unlike anything I’ve read before. And the art… *swoons*

I’ve never seen comics capture movement and momentum like this. The last conversation with Valentine (when you get there, you’ll know) was simply stunning. I also really appreciated the moments of emotional clarity between characters, and the little expected reveals in between the larger plot twists and turning points. There are little visual jokes sprinkled throughout. I always adore Gene Luen Yang, and now I’m going to have to check out Leuyen Pham, because I don’t think I could have loved this book more. It nailed everything. No notes, only stars.

I read a lot of books (and graphic novels) and I’ve never encountered one that portrayed the motion of dance so accurately and joyfully. Beautiful.
