Gorgeous, heartwarming story
I really enjoyed this heartwarming story of a teenager questioning the reality of true love.
Just a few pages were enough to pull me into Lunar New Year Love Story by Gene Luen Yang and LeUyen Pham.
Valentina has always loved Valentine's Day, but she becomes disillusioned with the holiday after entering high school. She believes that no one in her family has ever found and kept true love - that love has ended in heartbreak for her parents, grandparents, great-grandparents, and so on. Val lives with her dad and does not have a relationship with her mom.
She has a best friend, Bernice, and becomes a lion dancer alongside new friends Les and Jae. Valentina is Vietnamese American; there's also Korean and Chinese representation in the book.
The artwork is gorgeous. I found myself staring at page after page, thanks to the detail, especially in characters' facial expressions.
