I think I have found my new favorite graphic novel. First of all, the art work is beautiful and so expressive; it added layers and layers to this emotional story of Valentina as she navigates growing up. The cover intrigued me because we can see Valentina's face, but not the boy she is leaning on--clever!

This novel brought out all the emotions in me--laughter, anger, sadness, anxiety, frustration, fearfulness--and that made me fall in love with these characters even more. Each character felt real and each was dealing with deeper, real-life issues.

The book deals with difficult topics that happen in life every day--parental abandonment, divorce, alcoholism, family curses, first love, friendship, and more. I liked the twists and the magical realism--both made sense for Valentina's life.

The introduction to Lion Dancing was a joy! I loved getting an insider look at the costumes and dancers. It made me want to learn.

I didn't want to to put this down and it was a fun way to finish my year of reading.
