Just like the title says, Lunar New Year Love Story by Gene Luen Yang and LeUyen Pham is an extremely cute and unique YA romance graphic novel. The main character, Valentina, was surprisingly complex for a YA book, I found myself relating to her quite a bit. I also enjoyed her family, the grandma was a great addition to the story. The themes of the book are not too heavy for YA, but the characters have enough weight behind their actions and decisions that it felt very realistic to adults as well.
I was also a big fan of the art style! So many graphic novels have art that takes me out of the experience instead of immersing me further, but not Lunar New Year Love Story. The use of colors to portray emotions and the changing moods of the story was really well done, so overall hats off to the illustrator on a truly incredible job with this graphic novel!
