Lunar New Year Love Story is a charming graphic novel about being open to people and experience, and not letting the past or actions of others define you and your future. The graphic novel is geared toward a younger (middle grade) audience, but the themes are relevant for any aged reader.
The magical realism is used well as expressions of the inner emotions and fears of the characters. LeUyen Pham's illustrations are lovely and enhance the emotional impact of the graphic novel, as well as highlighting the bold beauty and grace of the lion dance costuming and performances.

As a graphic novel, the story is relatively short and quick to get through, but the story and characters are rich enough that I can see this becoming adapted into a feature film or a short series, and I would happily watch to see more of all of the characters.
