This is a charming, sweet romance. Things I read about the story claim the major meme is second chance romance, only they didn't have a relationship for which this is a second chance. Will sort of met Nora when he was 16. Nora never saw him at that time. I wasn't until 16 years later that they met face to face. The meme for this story is more enemies to friends to lovers. At their first true meeting, both have lost the original owner of their apartments. Will lost his uncle from whom he was estranged, ans Nora lost her grandmother whom she loved unconditionally.
Because Will didn't care for his uncle, he wasn't interested in living in the apartment. Since he couldn't sell the apartment for a year, he decided to turn it into a short-term rental. This offended Nora because it interfered with the familial nature of the building.
There is a subplot with a second chance romance that works nicely.
The day that Will first became aware of Nora was a game changer for him. He fell in love with a laugh and a ponytail. He discovered his mother had a brother. He heard just how bad things were between his mother and her brother when he overheard their very loud argument. Both of his parents were dead within 2 years. Will was not used to asking for help after that.
Nora spent her summers with her grandmother. Her parents were off at one dig or another during those summers. During the school year, they were either teaching or writing up their research from the summer before. Nora felt closer to her grandmother and the other residents of the apartment building than she did to her parents.
With backgrounds so similar, the pair grate on each other. It's not until Nora has to go to California that they realize how much they like and need each other.
I don't read too many contemporary romances. My preferred romance is the Regency. But I liked this one. I found it very satisfying.
