Vaguely reminiscent of ONE DAY IN DECEMBER (another book I love), LOVE AT FIRST opens with teenaged Will visiting an unknown relative in Chicago for reasons he doesn't fully understand when--banished to a balcony--he overhears a young woman's voice. Years later, that relative has died and Will inherits his apartment--along with an obligation not to sell it for a year. Busy as a medical resident, Will has mixed (mainly negative) feelings about his inheritance.
Although this book is clearly primarily a romance, the subplot is what really captured my interest.
