The first look is well-written, with an attention-grabbing beginning, but it's not my kind of book at all. It's too dark, too depressing, without the fantastical edge I prefer. The main character is in a lot of emotional pain and it seems like things aren't going to suddenly take a turn for the better. If I enjoyed this style of book, however, then I would probably say it was a great one.
