The main character, Vanja, is a spunky thief who plays by her own rules. This book has snarky jokes, sausage jokes, heists, identify switcheroos, good and bad acting, demons, Death, and a pure little investigator. There is a character who uses "they/them" pronouns, as well as a gender fluid character. The book was written in a fast pace with plenty of jokes, so even though some of the subject matter was dark, it was a fun read. This book is an adaptation of the Goose Girl, one of my favorite fairy tales, but this story is told in such a way that I forgot that it was a fairy tale retelling. I have a couple of questions remaining about the universe, like what exactly can prefects do, and am hoping that a sequel could clear that up. The book is also really pretty and has some awesome illustrations. I look forward to seeing what Margaret Owen does next!
