While the Young Adult book world is full of fairytale retellings, Little Thieves by Margaret Owen really stands on it’s own! This is a twist of “The Goose Girl,” but before we dive into the story we need to take a minute to appreciate the amazing artwork. There are several full page illustrations and they are stunning! They really bring an extra layer to the story and I love seeing an artists interpretation of scenes from the book.
Little Thieves follows Vanja, an orphaned child who becomes the Goddaughter to Fortune and Death. Sad to say, they’re not the best “parents” and Vanja is set on a path of misfortune and crime. Her story becomes one that I could not put down! Vanja is a great morally grey character who is so dang sassy! I found myself constantly laughing at her inner dialogue. It also features a swoon worthy romance with great banter, and a half-god that takes the form of a talking cat. I can’t wait for the sequel.
