First of all, the cover is even more stunning in person and looks absolutely amazing on my bookshelf. I read this book in one sitting because it was so engaging. I fell in love with the story and all of the characters. The writing was pretty and I enjoyed the metaphors and symbolism that were used by the author. The characters all had a lot of depth, especially Vanja, who's the main character.

Vanja is probably my favorite character because she's very complex and there are so many layers to her. Every time I think I understand her, there's some other angle or development that adds to her completeness as a character. She is very morally grey and views herself as a villain, which was an interesting angle to read from, especially when she turns out to be sort of a heroine. I really enjoyed the pearls being a metaphor for her "different" personalities and was cheering for her when she became "Vanja" and not anyone else.

I loved how I read it with my idea of what it was going to be like and it was nothing like that. Every chapter brought surprises and plot twists, and they were all very unexpected (especially the big one!), and although it isn't a thriller it still kept me on the edge of my seat waiting for what would happen next.
