I really enjoyed this dark retelling of the Goose Girl, where instead of following the princess turned goose girl, we follow the usurper on her quest to avoid Death and Fortune and steal enough to start a new life elsewhere, until she gets thrust into the midst of a political battle. I think the humor in this book will be divisive, but I really enjoyed the lighthearted and sarcastic banter throughout. The modern voice worked for me, despite the more medieval fantasy setting, but I think some readers will dislike the juxtaposition of the two styles. In addition, those looking for a fully explained magic system should give this a pass since details about the world and magic system are sprinkled slowly throughout, but there are definitely some details left unexplained and just taken for granted, which I don't mind at all. It was a slower start to the book for me, but I did really enjoy it by the end of the book and am looking forward to seeing where the author might take the characters in future books since I do think this book could be read satisfyingly as a stand alone.
