I heard about this book when I was looking up new books of 2021. What caught me immediately was the cover. The way the red girl statue stood between the two blue statues, gave me the feeling that the red girl was doing something secretive and that she was dangerous and not to be trusted while the blue characters made me think of sorrow, as if the reader will sympathize with them in the story for specific reasons. It was so bold and present. And then the synopsis, a girl the goddaughter of Goddesses gets cursed to turn into jewels piece by piece due to her greed. It reminds me of the take of Midas in a way. And she has a very limited time to break her curse and still do her heist. Two weeks. I am very curious of what can happen in this two weeks. What people will she meet? What body part turns into jewels first? The way the prologue starts off with her mother handing her to the Goddess of Fortune and The Goddess of Death is very captivating. The Goddesses personality aspects have me wondering what Vanja's life was like with them and the time skip to when she's now Greta. Her skilled way of manipulating everyone, of tricking them to not even suspect Gisele (the girl she was a servant for: which begs the question what happened to Gisele??) And then we learn she's been doing this for a year, stealing underneath the name Pfennigeist and leaving a red penny at the scene of the crimes. No one suspects her at all. The ending of Chapter 1 leaves the reader with a bundle of questions even though it's the first chapter and I love that. Only 17 pages in and the reader is already coming up with theories about Vanya. I cannot wait to read more of this very intriguing book!
