This book starts out scary and just gets worse. I realize that there are plenty of women who aren't terrified of the idea of having children, but this author pulls no punches when discussing the mechanical side of giving birth to children. And Lauren isn't having just one, but two, so the effects are worse. The book opens with removing the children with forceps because one of them is stuck in the birth canal. Lauren is catheterized. She is unable to lift the children properly from the basket in order to feed them. She has a nincompoop for a husband and lives in some backward time where he can't stay to help her so she's left to care for two brand new humans all by herself. All of these things add up to remind the reader that motherhood is horrifying.

And then Lauren hears the woman in the cubicle next to her. And the woman wants to make a deal. We know how the deal goes, but then what? I look forward to finding out.
