This was a difficult book to read emotionally, especially in the beginning, when Lauren is having such a hard time. She's exhausted, scared, and is being denied the help she needs by her husband. It's a lot for her to handle and the reader feels that with her. Thankfully the heaviness lessens as the story progresses towards exploring the mystery - is Lauren crazy? Are those her babies or not?

It's an interesting mix of a contemporary mystery and creepy folklore. I haven't read something like this before. There's a constant switching between giving hints towards Lauren being right and evidence that she's going through some sort of breakdown and it's all in her head.

There were parts that I thought required a bit of suspension of disbelief (and not the folklore bits), but the novel smoothed them over pretty quickly and I was able to overlook them. I didn't really care for the moments when Lauren seemed to be of a more unstable mind and I'd have liked it to be a tiny bit more creepy and suspenseful though there was a moment that chilled me. That was excellent. For me, Harper - the woman who is investigating, was the weak point. She seemed to waffle about in her relationship to a reporter than made me question her reliability towards the end of the novel along with Lauren's.

Overall, a unique, interesting novel that's good for someone looking for a different sort of mystery.
