Melanie Golding’s debut novel Little Darlings is destined to be a smash hit! She manages to deftly balance edge-of-your-seat thrills with a relatable depiction of the postpartum period. The result is an exciting thriller that made me, a new mother, feel so seen.

Lauren and Patrick have just had twin boys, Morgan and Riley. While she’s still in the hospital recovering from the birth, a mysterious, stinky woman in dark rags tries to steal Lauren’s twins and replace them with her own. Lauren understandably freaks out and calls 999. When hospital security arrives, however, the mysterious would-be child abductor is nowhere to be found. The doctors conclude Lauren experienced a psychotic episode, but DS Joanna Harper is not willing to accept that explanation. To her boss’s chagrin, she takes Lauren at her word and continues to investigate the case as an attempted kidnapping. Is DS Harper on the right track, or is Lauren really psychotic?

I hope Little Darlings is going to be a series because I would love to read more about DS Joanna Harper. She has such a nuanced history that readers only get glimpses of in this book. I’ll be keeping my eye out for new works by Melanie Golding, that’s for sure!
