This was a miraculous debut novel and I was blown away when I learned that this was Golding’s first novel. This is one of those books that has you second-guessing yourself (and Lauren) until the very end. As a mother, nothing is more frightening than losing your child(ren). But to have them replaced by monsters that only you can see? That’s enough to drive someone mad. I really felt for Lauren, relating to her in a way I didn't quite expect. Sometimes we need a little bit of darkness in the stories that we read, to capture us and bring out our fears, and this certainly does both.

This book is for fans of fairy tales and those that are not afraid to dive into the dark side. The writing was absolutely superb and Golding is promising for anything she may write in the future.
